The Immaculate, now named Ildiko, grows more and more self aware. In a trance, she tells Johnathan about a race called the IntilImani who have evolved to such a degree that they could control reality. Is this how the city of Vermillion came into being? Johnathan has no time to ponder this as Ildiko leads him into another reality to prove her story.

Travel through interstellar space can be strange. One jump by the Marcus Garvey creates an "immaculate", a completely pure being created out of nothing. This being and Johnathan Cave seem strangely drawn to each other. Unfortunately Johnathans brother Daniel is attracted too, but his feelings towards the newcomer verge on the homicidal.
