Released on July 19, 1980, 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother is an anime film directed by Isao Takahata. It is a 107-minute theatrical edit of the 1976 television series, which was produced by Nippon Animation and loosely based on a short story from Edmondo De Amicis's 1886 novel, Cuore.

Set in 1881, the story follows a young Italian boy named Marco Rossi. His mother, Anna Rossi, travels to Argentina to work as a domestic servant to help pay off family debts during an economic depression in Genoa.
